MONROE, La. (Interstat) — A surging Marshall women’s basketball team looks to continue its strong season when it visits Louisiana-Monroe on Friday afternoon at Fant-Ewing Coliseum. The Thundering Herd (16-5) enter with confidence after a 61-52 road victory at Southern Mississippi on Thursday. Marshall has won seven of its last nine games. The Warhawks (8-10), meanwhile, aim to rebound from a narrow 72-68 home loss to James Madison on Thursday. Marshall’s success is fueled by balance and resilience. In the win over Southern Miss, Meredith Maier scored 14 points, Timaya Lewis-Eutsey added 12 and Peyton Ilderton contributed 11. Maier, a key player to watch, is averaging 9.7 points per game over her last seven contests, including a 17-point performance in an overtime win at Coastal Carolina on Jan. 1. Louisiana-Monroe counters with dynamic guard Nakiyah Mays-Prince, who is coming off a 14-point, six-assist effort against James Madison. She has been a consistent force, averaging 14.4 points and 5.4 assists over her last seven games. Her standout performance was a 20-point, 10-assist double-double in a 102-58 rout of Louisiana-Lafayette on Jan. 17. The matchup pits Marshall’s steady consistency against a Warhawks squad capable of high-scoring outbursts but struggling with consistency. Louisiana-Monroe’s 102-point game shows its offensive ceiling, but it has also endured lopsided losses to power-conference foes Alabama and Indiana this season. According to National Statistical’s ELO system, Marshall is projected with a 77.20% probability to win. The Thundering Herd have proven effective on the road this season, including recent wins at Coastal Carolina and Appalachian State. Friday’s contest is the only scheduled meeting between the programs this season.
