OMAHA, Neb. (Interstat) — Two Big East women’s basketball teams looking to halt slides will meet Tuesday when the Xavier Musketeers visit the Creighton Bluejays at CHI Health Center Omaha. Xavier (10-8, 3-4 Big East) enters on a two-game losing streak following a narrow 66-64 home loss to St. John’s on Saturday. The Musketeers have lost four of their last six contests. Creighton (7-11, 1-6) has dropped five of its last six, including a heartbreaking 80-77 overtime defeat at Providence on Saturday. The matchup features two of the conference’s top offensive talents. Xavier will lean on guard Mariyah Noel, who is coming off a career-high 30-point performance in the loss to St. John’s. Over her last seven games, Noel is averaging 16.9 points, 5.4 rebounds and 3.7 assists while playing nearly 36 minutes per contest. She will be countered by Creighton’s Kennedy Townsend. The guard has been a consistent scorer for the Bluejays, averaging 16.1 points over her last seven outings, including a 30-point effort at Georgetown on Dec. 28. Townsend played all 40 minutes in the overtime loss to Providence, contributing 18 points and four assists. While Xavier holds the better overall record, road wins have been elusive. The Musketeers are 1-4 in true road games this season, with their lone victory a 52-51 squeaker at Georgetown on Jan. 4. Creighton will aim to protect its home court, where it is 5-4 this season, including a Big East win over Butler on Jan. 4. The game is a critical opportunity for both teams to gain momentum in the middle of the conference schedule. Xavier seeks to climb back to .500 in league play, while Creighton desperately needs a victory to improve its standing after a difficult start to the Big East season. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. CST Tuesday at CHI Health Center Omaha.
