Preview: North Texas Mean Green at UAB Blazers BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (Interstat) — Two American Athletic Conference women’s basketball teams on divergent recent paths will meet Tuesday when the North Texas Mean Green visit the UAB Blazers at Bartow Arena. North Texas (10-7, 4-1 AAC) enters riding a three-game conference winning streak, most recently a 75-64 home victory over Memphis on Jan. 13. The Mean Green have found their footing in league play behind balanced scoring, getting 16 points from guard Mekhia Chase, 17 from Megan Nestor and 14 from Chania Price in the win over the Tigers. Chase has been a key catalyst during the streak, averaging 14.3 points over the last three contests. Her backcourt play will be central against UAB’s pressure. Conversely, UAB (7-11, 0-5) seeks its first AAC win amid a six-game skid. The Blazers fell 73-68 at Tulane on Saturday despite 17 points from guard Cali Smallwood and 14 points and four assists from Sofia Munoz. Smallwood has been a consistent offensive bright spot, scoring in double figures in five of the last seven games, including a 20-point effort against South Florida on Jan. 6. The Blazers’ struggles are underscored by their conference record, with four of their five AAC losses coming by 10 points or fewer, including an overtime defeat at East Carolina. North Texas holds a clear advantage in current form, but the game marks the start of a challenging stretch for the Mean Green, who will play seven of their next nine on the road after Tuesday. For UAB, it represents a critical opportunity to halt their slide in front of a home crowd before hosting East Carolina on Saturday. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. CST Tuesday at Bartow Arena. The teams will meet again in Denton, Texas, on Feb. 17.
