CHARLOTTE, N.C. (Interstat) — Two American Athletic Conference teams seeking momentum will meet Tuesday when the Charlotte 49ers host the Florida Atlantic Owls in a women’s basketball matchup at Halton Arena. Both teams enter with identical 8-10 overall records. The game is a chance for either squad to climb back to .500 and gain traction in the conference standings. Florida Atlantic looks to rebound from a difficult 79-42 home loss to Texas-San Antonio last Friday. The Owls had shown promise prior to that defeat, securing conference wins over Wichita State and UAB earlier this month. A key to their success is forward Vivian Onugha, who has been a consistent scorer. Onugha is coming off a 14-point performance against UTSA and averaged 13.2 points over her last five games, including a 16-point outing in the win over Wichita State. Charlotte has also struggled recently, dropping its last three games, including a 64-53 home loss to Tulsa on Saturday. The 49ers are led by guard Tanajah Hayes, who is capable of carrying the offensive load. Hayes exploded for 28 points in the loss to Tulsa and posted a 23-point, 6-rebound, 5-assist stat line in a win over UAB on Jan. 3. Her playmaking and scoring will be central to Charlotte’s hopes of defending its home court. The matchup presents a contrast in recent performance trends. While FAU aims to shake off a lopsided defeat, Charlotte seeks to end a skid and capitalize on home advantage. The teams will meet again in Boca Raton on Feb. 24. Tip-off is set for Tuesday, Jan. 20, 2026, in Charlotte.
