MACOMB, Ill. (Interstat) — A stark contrast in fortunes will be on display Thursday night when the surging Western Illinois Leathernecks host the struggling Tennessee State Tigers in an Ohio Valley Conference women’s basketball matchup at Western Hall. Western Illinois (11-2, 1-1 OVC) enters riding high, having won nine of its last ten games. The Leathernecks are coming off a gritty 58-51 road victory at Southeast Missouri State on Saturday. Their success is fueled by standout forward Mia Nicastro, who is averaging 21.6 points and 8.6 rebounds per game. She erupted for 29 points and seven rebounds in the win over SEMO and posted a 25-point, 13-rebound double-double in a double-overtime loss to Tennessee-Martin on Jan. 1. Tennessee State (2-11, 1-1), meanwhile, seeks to halt a two-game skid and find consistency. The Tigers were held to a season-low 39 points in a lopsided 76-39 loss at Arkansas-Little Rock last Saturday. Guard Amiyah Ferguson, a key player for the Tigers, scored six points in that contest. She has shown flashes, including a 10-point effort in a win over Southeast Missouri State on Dec. 20, but Tennessee State has struggled offensively, scoring 63 points or fewer in eight of its 11 losses. The Leathernecks’ defense, which allows just 58.2 points per game, will pose a significant challenge for a Tennessee State team averaging only 60.2 points. Western Illinois has been dominant at home, winning all six contests in Macomb this season by an average margin of 33 points. This game opens a critical two-game homestand for Western Illinois, which faces Tennessee Tech on Saturday. Tennessee State continues a road swing at Eastern Illinois on Jan. 10. The teams will meet again in Nashville on Feb. 7. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. CST Thursday.
