Preview: Akron Zips at Western Michigan Broncos KALAMAZOO, Mich. (Interstat) — Two Mid-American Conference women’s basketball teams seeking momentum will meet Wednesday when the Western Michigan Broncos host the Akron Zips at University Arena. The Broncos (4-8) enter conference play coming off their most impressive win of the season, an 83-65 victory over Buffalo on Saturday. The Zips (3-11) are looking to rebound from a 56-73 loss at Ohio that same day. Western Michigan will rely on guard Alli Carlson, who is coming off a complete performance against Buffalo with 22 points, five rebounds and six assists in 40 minutes. She has averaged 17.3 points over her last three games. Akron counters with guard Corinne Reed, who has been a consistent contributor. In the loss to Ohio, she posted 14 points, six rebounds and five assists. Over her last five games, Reed is averaging 10.4 points, 4.6 rebounds and 3.8 assists. Both teams have struggled against non-conference power opponents this season. Akron’s three wins have come against lower-division Geneva and Le Moyne, and Division I Heidelberg. Western Michigan’s signature win is against Buffalo, with its other victories coming against Valparaiso, Loyola Chicago and Milwaukee. The Broncos have shown an ability to defend at home, holding opponents to an average of 60.2 points in their five games in Kalamazoo this season. Akron has lost all seven of its road games, with an average margin of defeat of 22.1 points. Wednesday’s contest opens the MAC schedule for both squads. Following this game, Western Michigan travels to Toledo on Saturday, while Akron hosts Miami (Ohio). Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. EST at University Arena.
