Preview: Grand Canyon Antelopes at San Diego State Aztecs SAN DIEGO (Interstat) — The surging San Diego State women’s basketball team will look to extend its winning streak when it hosts struggling Grand Canyon in a nonconference matchup Wednesday night at Viejas Arena. The Aztecs (10-3) enter on a five-game win streak, most recently a 72-55 road victory at Wyoming on Saturday. Sophomore guard Bailey Barnhard led the charge with a career-high 21 points in just 23 minutes, continuing a run of strong play. Over her last five games, Barnhard is averaging 9.8 points and 3.4 rebounds while providing efficient scoring in limited minutes. San Diego State has found success with balanced contributions and stout defense, holding opponents to an average of 55.2 points during their current streak. Their 10-3 start marks one of the program’s best in recent seasons. They face a Grand Canyon team (3-11) arriving with momentum from its best performance of the season, an 87-76 road win at Boise State last Saturday. The Antelopes snapped a four-game skid behind a dominant double-double from junior forward Anisa Jeffries, who posted 13 points and 14 rebounds. Jeffries has been a bright spot, averaging 11.4 points and 5.6 rebounds over her last five contests. Despite the breakthrough win, Grand Canyon’s season has been defined by narrow defeats, including three losses by four points or fewer. Consistency remains a challenge for the Antelopes, who will need another standout performance from Jeffries and support from Chloe Mann (17 points vs. Boise State) and Julianna LaMendola (16 points) to compete with the Aztecs. This game serves as a final nonconference tune-up for both sides before continuing their conference schedules. For San Diego State, it’s an opportunity to solidify its record against a lower-tier opponent. For Grand Canyon, it’s a chance to build on its first road win and prove it can challenge a team with a winning pedigree. The teams are scheduled to meet again in a Mountain West Conference rematch on Feb. 4 in Phoenix. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. PST Wednesday.
