Preview: UNC Asheville at Gardner-Webb Womenās Basketball SHELBY, N.C. (Interstat) ā Two Big South Conference teams seeking momentum will meet Wednesday when the UNC Asheville Bulldogs visit the Gardner-Webb Runninā Bulldogs at Paul Porter Arena. Both teams enter the matchup with struggling overall records. UNC Asheville is 5-10, while Gardner-Webb sits at 4-11. The game represents an early conference opportunity for either squad to build confidence. UNC Asheville looks to bounce back from a narrow 59-55 home loss to Winthrop on Saturday. In that game, guard Nia Green scored a team-high 19 points. Green has been the Bulldogsā most consistent offensive threat, averaging 17.7 points over her last seven games. She has scored in double figures in every contest during that stretch, including a 22-point performance in a win over Simmons. Gardner-Webb, however, carries a positive result from its last outing, a 54-48 road victory at Winthrop on Dec. 31. Amina Gray led the way with 21 points, four rebounds and two assists. Gray has been a bright spot for the Runninā Bulldogs, averaging 16.3 points over her last four games. She will be central to Gardner-Webbās hopes of securing a second straight win. The matchup features two of the conferenceās top individual scorers in Green and Gray, whose backcourt battle could dictate the tempo. Both teams have shown offensive potential in non-conference play but have also been prone to scoring droughts. Historically, games between these programs have been closely contested. Wednesdayās meeting offers a chance for either team to gain an early foothold in the Big South standings and reverse their seasonās trajectory. After this game, UNC Asheville will host Longwood on Saturday. Gardner-Webb will remain at home to face South Carolina Upstate the same day.
