HARTFORD, Conn. (Interstat) — The undefeated and top-ranked Connecticut Huskies put their perfect record on the line Wednesday night when they host the surging Saint John’s Red Storm in a Big East women’s basketball showdown at the XL Center. The Huskies (15-0, 3-0 Big East), who have dominated every opponent this season by an average margin of 36.5 points, face one of their stiffest conference tests to date. Saint John’s (13-3, 2-1) arrives with confidence, having won five of its last six games, including a 75-58 victory over DePaul on Jan. 1. UConn’s engine is star forward Sarah Strong, who is coming off an 18-point, 8-rebound, 4-assist performance in an 84-48 rout of Seton Hall. Strong has been a model of consistency, scoring in double figures in every game this season and averaging 19.2 points over her last five contests. The Red Storm will counter with guard Beautiful Waheed, who is coming into her own. Waheed stuffed the stat sheet with 11 points, five rebounds, three assists and four blocks in the win over DePaul and averaged 12.2 points over a recent five-game stretch. Her defensive activity will be crucial against the multifaceted UConn attack. While the Huskies have been a juggernaut, their closest call was a 72-69 win over Michigan in November. Saint John’s will look to replicate the defensive pressure that held Hofstra to 60 points in a narrow win last month. However, a 85-48 loss at Villanova on Dec. 22 exposed the gap the Red Storm must close against elite competition. UConn has won the last 32 meetings between the programs. Saint John’s last victory in the series came in 1993. Following this game, Connecticut travels to face Creighton on Sunday. Saint John’s returns home to host Butler on Saturday.
