Preview: Kent State at Central Michigan Women’s Basketball MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. (Interstat) — The Central Michigan Chippewas, riding a three-game winning streak, will host the struggling Kent State Golden Flashes in a Mid-American Conference women’s basketball matchup Wednesday afternoon at McGuirk Arena. Central Michigan (8-5) enters conference play with momentum following a 68-56 road victory at Bowling Green on Saturday. The Chippewas have won five of their last six, with their only loss in that span an 85-83 overtime defeat to Ohio. Kent State (5-9) looks to snap a three-game skid, most recently falling 75-70 to Massachusetts at home on Saturday. The Golden Flashes have lost seven of their last nine after a 3-2 start to the season. A key matchup will feature two of the conference’s top guards. Central Michigan’s Nekhu Mitchell is coming off a standout performance with 17 points, six rebounds and four assists against Bowling Green. Over her last three full games, Mitchell has averaged 11.7 points, 4.7 rebounds and 5.0 assists. She will be countered by Kent State’s Mya Babbitt, who scored a team-high 20 points in the loss to UMass. Babbitt has been a consistent minutes leader, playing 37 or more in three of the last four contests, and averaged 14 points per game during that stretch. Central Michigan has found success with balanced scoring. Alongside Mitchell, Madi Morson leads the team after pouring in 22 points against Bowling Green. Kent State will need more offensive support behind Babbitt. Emory Klatt (12 points) and Rylee Kalocay (10 points) provided help against UMass, but the Golden Flashes have been held under 70 points in five of their nine losses. The Chippewas have been strong defensively during their winning streak, holding opponents to an average of 56 points per game. Kent State averages 69.1 points per game overall but just 66.3 during its current three-game losing streak. Wednesday’s contest opens the MAC schedule for both teams. Central Michigan will visit Massachusetts on Saturday. Kent State travels to face Eastern Michigan next.
