Preview: UCF Knights at Arizona State Sun Devils TEMPE, Ariz. (Interstat) — A surging Arizona State squad looks to rebound from its first loss when it hosts a struggling UCF team in a Big 12 women’s basketball matchup Wednesday night at Wells Fargo Arena. The Sun Devils (15-1, 0-1 Big 12) saw their perfect start end with a 71-62 road loss at BYU on Saturday. Despite the setback, Arizona State has been one of the nation’s most consistent teams, featuring a defense that has held 10 opponents under 60 points. Forward Heloisa Carrera has been a key contributor, averaging 7.9 points and 4.9 rebounds. She nearly posted a double-double in the loss to BYU with 10 points and nine rebounds. They face a UCF team (8-6, 0-1) seeking to halt a three-game skid. The Knights are coming off an 83-68 home loss to Kansas, where defensive struggles were evident. Their hopes largely rest on the offensive production of guard Leah Harmon, who is averaging 21.1 points per game. Harmon exploded for a career-high 38 points in 38 minutes against the Jayhawks, marking her fourth consecutive game scoring 15 or more points. However, Harmon’s scoring has not translated to wins recently, as UCF has lost five of its last seven. The Knights will need more support beyond Harmon and forward Mahogany Chandler-Roberts (14 points, seven rebounds vs. Kansas) to challenge a deep Arizona State roster. The Sun Devils boast balanced scoring, with guard Gabby Elliott leading the team at 13.1 points per game and adding 21 in the BYU contest. Arizona State’s early schedule strength, with road wins at Utah, Gonzaga and Oregon State, has prepared them for conference play. This game marks just the second Big 12 contest for both programs. Arizona State aims to protect its home court, where it is 8-0 this season, while UCF looks to steal a critical road victory to stabilize its season. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. MST Wednesday.
