HATTIESBURG, Miss. (Interstat) — A surging Arkansas State women’s basketball team aims to extend its six-game winning streak when it visits Southern Mississippi on Thursday at Reed Green Coliseum. The Red Wolves (11-3) enter the New Year’s Day matchup with significant momentum, most notably an 81-72 road victory over in-state rival Arkansas on Sunday. The Lady Eagles (9-4) have won three of their last four, last playing in a 76-58 home win over Louisiana-Lafayette on Dec. 20. Arkansas State’s streak has been fueled by balance and the dynamic play of guard Crislyn Rose. In the win at Arkansas, Rose posted 15 points and eight assists. Over the last six games, she is averaging 12.3 points and 4.7 assists, including a 22-point performance against Florida Gulf Coast. Southern Mississippi counters with its own standout in forward Sakyia White. She is coming off a strong 16-point, eight-rebound effort against Louisiana-Lafayette and has been a consistent interior presence. Support comes from Hayleigh Breland, who nearly recorded a double-double with 12 points and nine rebounds in that same contest. The Red Wolves’ only loss since Nov. 19 was a 23-point setback at Central Arkansas. Their current streak includes convincing wins over South Alabama, Louisiana-Monroe and Tennessee-Martin. Southern Mississippi has shown a capacity for high-scoring outputs, topping 80 points three times this season, but also suffered lopsided losses to power-conference foes North Carolina State and Mississippi State. This contest marks the first of a home-and-home series between the programs this season. They are scheduled to meet again in Jonesboro on Jan. 17. Following this game, Arkansas State visits Louisiana-Monroe on Saturday. Southern Mississippi remains home to host Troy on Saturday. Tip-off is scheduled for Thursday afternoon in Hattiesburg.
