ATLANTA (Interstat) — A surging Notre Dame women’s basketball team opens its Atlantic Coast Conference schedule on New Year’s Day against a Georgia Tech squad seeking a turnaround, Thursday at Hank McCamish Pavilion. The Fighting Irish (10-2) enter conference play riding a five-game winning streak, including a dominant 94-59 victory over Pittsburgh on Monday. Notre Dame’s offense has been prolific during the stretch, averaging 90.4 points per game. All-American guard Hannah Hidalgo powers Notre Dame. She is averaging 24 points over her last six games, including a 30-point, 10-assist performance in a 110-38 rout of Bellarmine on Dec. 21 and 30 points against Pitt. She is flanked by reliable scorers Iyana Moore and Cassandre Prosper, who combined for 41 points in the most recent win. Georgia Tech (5-9) snapped a four-game skid with a 79-63 home win over Wofford on Sunday. The Yellow Jackets’ season has been defined by offensive struggles, failing to reach 60 points in six of their nine losses. They will need a significant defensive effort to slow the Irish. A key for the Yellow Jackets will be forward Brianna Turnage, who turned in a remarkable all-around performance against Wofford with 17 rebounds and seven assists. Her ability to impact the game on the glass and facilitate will be critical against a talented Irish frontcourt. Notre Dame holds a distinct advantage in pedigree and recent performance, but the conference opener on the road presents a classic trap scenario. Georgia Tech will aim to control the tempo and leverage its home court to keep the game within reach. The Irish, however, with their high-powered offense led by Hidalgo, will be favored to extend their streak and start ACC play 1-0. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. EST Thursday.
