Winless New Orleans Seeks First Victory Against Texas-Rio Grande Valley EDINBURG, Texas (Interstat) — The winless New Orleans Privateers look to break a season-opening 10-game skid when they visit the Texas-Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros in a nonconference women’s basketball game Monday. The matchup, organized by the Southland Conference, tips off at 7 p.m. CST at UT Pan Am Field House. New Orleans (0-10) is coming off a 79-68 home loss to Incarnate Word on Dec. 18. The Privateers have faced a difficult schedule, including blowout losses to then-LSU (126-62) and Oklahoma State (109-48). Their average margin of defeat is 23.2 points. Guard Shanihya Brown has been a bright spot for the Privateers, averaging 17.7 points and 3.3 assists over her last three games. She scored 19 points with five assists in the loss to Incarnate Word. Texas-Rio Grande Valley (4-7) has struggled recently, losing four of its last five, including a 71-44 defeat at South Dakota on Dec. 18. The Vaqueros’ most notable result was an 87-85 road win at Stephen F. Austin on Dec. 15. Forward Kayla Lorenz is a key contributor for UTRGV, averaging 8.6 points. She scored 12 points against then-Texas on Dec. 10. This game represents one of New Orleans’ more favorable opportunities to secure its first win this season. UTRGV has defended its home court well, posting a 3-2 record in Edinburg, including a season-opening 110-36 victory over Arlington Baptist. Following this game, New Orleans opens Southland play at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Wednesday. UTRGV begins its conference slate at home against Nicholls State the same day.
