Preview: Utah Valley Wolverines at California Baptist Lancers RIVERSIDE, Calif. (Interstat) — A pair of Western Athletic Conference women’s basketball teams looking to steady their seasons will meet Monday when the Utah Valley Wolverines visit the California Baptist Lancers at CBU Events Center. Utah Valley (6-4) enters the non-conference matchup seeking to rebound from a narrow 59-56 home loss to Idaho State on Dec. 20. The Wolverines have shown a balanced attack, with guard Saige Gibb coming off a 14-point, six-rebound performance in that defeat. Gibb has been a key contributor, scoring 14 points in two of her last three outings. California Baptist (6-7) aims to halt a six-game skid, its most recent a 87-56 road loss to Nebraska on Dec. 21. Despite the team’s struggles, forward Lauren Olsen has been a consistent bright spot. She nearly posted a double-double against the Cornhuskers, scoring 17 points and grabbing eight rebounds, and has averaged 12.6 points over the losing streak. The Lancers will rely on home-court advantage, where they are 4-2 this season, including decisive wins over Sacramento State and Cal State Northridge in November. Utah Valley is 4-1 at home but just 2-3 in true road games. This contest serves as a final tune-up before both teams open WAC play on Jan. 1. Utah Valley hosts Tarleton State, while California Baptist welcomes Texas-Arlington to Riverside. The matchup pits Utah Valley’s defense, which has held opponents under 60 points in five of its six wins, against a California Baptist offense searching for consistency after being held under 60 points in three of its last four losses. Player health and which team can establish an early rhythm after the holiday break will likely be decisive factors Monday night.
