LEXINGTON, Ky. (Interstat) — A surging Kentucky women’s basketball team, ranked among the nation’s elite, will host a struggling Hofstra squad in nonconference play Sunday at Rupp Arena. The Wildcats (12-1) enter the contest riding a seven-game winning streak, their lone loss a 74-66 defeat at Maryland on Nov. 26. Kentucky has dominated at home, winning by an average of 43.3 points in its six victories in Lexington. Hofstra (2-8) has lost three straight and eight of its last nine, with its only wins this season coming against Marywood and Yale. Kentucky is led by guard Tonie Morgan, who has been a consistent force. Over her last four games, she averaged 17 points and 7 assists, including an 18-point, 9-assist performance in a road win at Belmont on Dec. 14. Her backcourt leadership has powered a Wildcats offense that has scored 80 or more points in five games this season. The Pride will counter with guard Chloe Sterling, who leads the team in minutes and has been a steady contributor. Sterling is coming off a 38-minute effort in a 52-43 loss at Albany on Dec. 21, where she posted 9 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists. Forward Micaela Carter, who scored a team-high 15 points against Albany, will also be a key for Hofstra’s offense. The matchup presents a stark contrast in trajectories. Kentucky, which blasted Wright State 96-53 in its last outing, is tuning up for a rigorous Southeastern Conference slate that begins Jan. 1 at LSU. Hofstra, which has struggled offensively, averaging just 55.8 points per game, begins Coastal Athletic Association play on Jan. 2. For the Pride, the game at famed Rupp Arena represents one of their toughest tests of the season. Containing Morgan and a deep Kentucky roster that features double-figure scorers Clara Strack and Kaelyn Carroll will be the primary challenge. The Wildcats have held opponents to 55.2 points per game during their current win streak. Tipoff is set for Sunday afternoon. Kentucky leads the all-time series 2-0, with the last meeting a Wildcats victory in 2011.
