SAN JOSE, Calif. (Interstat) — Two teams seeking momentum at the close of non-conference play will meet Sunday when the San Jose State Spartans host the Grand Canyon Antelopes in women’s basketball. The game at the Event Center pits struggling programs with nearly identical records. San Jose State (2-10) enters with a slight edge over Grand Canyon (1-10), with both looking to build on rare recent victories. The Spartans snapped a five-game skid with a 61-56 home win over Sacramento State on Dec. 21. That victory was powered by a career performance from forward Maya Anderson, who poured in 29 points and grabbed seven rebounds while playing the entire 40 minutes. Anderson averages 13.8 points per game and is the focal point of the San Jose State offense, having scored 18 or more points in three of her last six outings. Grand Canyon’s lone win came against SMU on Nov. 18, and the Antelopes are mired in a seven-game losing streak. Their most recent contest was a heartbreaking 61-60 loss to UNLV on Dec. 17, a game in which they held a late lead. Guard Anisa Jeffries, who scored 12 points in that narrow defeat, is a key perimeter player for the Antelopes. She averages 6.8 points and has logged significant minutes in recent games, including a 31-minute effort against Santa Clara. Both teams have faced challenging schedules, with losses to common opponents Saint Mary’s and California. Defense has been an issue for each; Grand Canyon allows an average of 71.5 points per game, while San Jose State yields 69.8. This contest serves as a final tune-up before each team plunges into conference play. San Jose State will open Mountain West action on Dec. 31 at Utah State. Grand Canyon begins Western Athletic Conference play on the same day, hosting Colorado State. Sunday’s matchup tips off at 2 p.m. PST.
