Providence Faces Top-Ranked South Carolina in Nonconference Finale COLUMBIA, S.C. (Interstat) — The Providence Friars face their toughest test of the season Sunday when they visit the South Carolina Gamecocks at Colonial Life Arena. The nonconference matchup pits a surging Providence team (8-5) against a dominant South Carolina squad (12-1) that has won eight straight games since its only loss to Texas in November. The Gamecocks have won those eight games by an average margin of 48.5 points, including a 105-43 rout at Florida Gulf Coast on Dec. 20. Providence is coming off a 68-61 overtime victory against Georgetown on Dec. 21, led by Sabou Gueye’s 23 points, eight rebounds and three blocks. Gueye, a guard, has been a key performer, averaging 15.2 points over her last six games. She will need a standout effort alongside teammates Orlagh Gormley and Ashley Dinges to challenge the Gamecocks’ formidable frontcourt. South Carolina is powered by Joyce Edwards, who is averaging 25.8 points and 7.5 rebounds over her last five games. She posted 29 points and 10 rebounds in the win at Florida Gulf Coast. The Gamecocks’ offense, which has scored 95 or more points in four of its last five games, features multiple threats, including Madina Okot and Ta’Niya Latson. The Friars have shown resilience, winning three of their last four, but have struggled on the road this season with a 1-3 record away from home. South Carolina is 7-0 at home and has not lost at Colonial Life Arena since the 2023-24 season. This game concludes nonconference play for both programs. Providence opens Big East action at home against Connecticut on Dec. 31. South Carolina begins its Southeastern Conference schedule at home against Alabama on Jan. 1. Tipoff is set for 1 p.m. EST Sunday.
