GAINESVILLE, Fla. (Interstat) — The Florida Gators, looking to rebound from a rare home loss, will host the Furman Paladins in a nonconference women’s basketball matchup Sunday at the O’Connell Center. Florida (11-3) enters the contest after a 74-67 defeat to Tulsa on Dec. 21, which snapped a three-game winning streak. The Gators, who are 7-1 at home this season, have been led by a balanced attack. Laila Reynolds has been a consistent contributor, averaging 11.1 points per game. She scored 14 points with four rebounds and two blocks in the loss to Tulsa, following a 13-point performance in a win over Florida A&M. Furman (6-6) arrives having won four of its last five games, including a 66-53 road victory at Charleston Southern on Dec. 19. The Paladins’ offense runs through guard Clare Coyle, who is in the midst of a stellar stretch. She poured in 31 points in just 21 minutes in a blowout win over Mars Hill on Dec. 14 and scored 19 points in the win at Charleston Southern. Over her last five games, Coyle is averaging 18.6 points. The game represents a final tune-up for both teams before league play intensifies. Florida will open a rugged Southeastern Conference slate on Jan. 1 at Tennessee. Furman, which plays in the Southern Conference, will host Brevard on Dec. 30. Historically, this is an uncommon matchup. The programs have met only once before, with Florida securing a 79-55 victory in Gainesville during the 2008-09 season. The Paladins will need another high-scoring performance from Coyle to challenge the deeper, power-conference Gators. Florida will aim to leverage its size and defensive pressure to contain Coyle and correct the mistakes that led to its loss to Tulsa before embarking on its demanding SEC schedule. Tip-off is set for Sunday afternoon.
