STAR CITY, W.Va. (Interstat) ā A surging West Virginia womenās basketball team will look to extend its winning streak when it hosts Houston in a Big 12 Conference matchup Sunday at WVU Coliseum. The Mountaineers (10-2) enter on a four-game win streak, most recently defeating Texas A&M 63-45 on the road Dec. 14. West Virginia has dominated at home, winning all six contests in Morgantown by an average margin of 41.2 points. A key to their success has been forward Kierra Wheeler, who has averaged 16.8 points over the last four games, including a 23-point, six-assist performance in a 109-40 rout of Texas Southern on Dec. 8. Houston (6-5) seeks consistency after alternating wins and losses over its past five games. The Cougars are coming off a 60-54 home victory over Montana on Dec. 16, where forward TK Pitts posted a double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds. Pitts has been a focal point, averaging 12.3 points and 6.2 rebounds over her last six contests, highlighted by a 17-point effort in a win at Tulsa on Nov. 30. This game marks the conference opener for both teams. West Virginiaās defense has been formidable, holding opponents to 54.8 points per game, while Houston has struggled offensively at times, scoring 60 or fewer points in three of its five losses. The Mountaineersā early schedule featured power conference opponents like Duke and Ohio State, while Houstonās non-conference slate included setbacks to Arkansas State and Southern. West Virginia holds a clear edge in recent performance, but the Cougars will aim to leverage Pittsā interior presence and build momentum from their narrow win over Montana. Following this game, Houston hosts Iowa State on Dec. 31. West Virginia opens the new year with a road game at Kansas on Jan. 1. Tipoff is scheduled for Sunday, Dec. 21, 2025.
