BLACKSBURG, Va. (Interstat) — The Virginia Tech women’s basketball team looks to carry momentum from a decisive road win into its final non-conference tune-up when it hosts intrastate foe Radford on Sunday at Cassell Coliseum. The Hokies (10-3) are coming off a 79-54 rout at Florida State on Thursday, a performance headlined by point guard Mackenzie Nelson’s 18 points and 12 assists. Nelson has been a steady facilitator, averaging 8.2 assists over her last five games for a Virginia Tech offense that has scored 73 or more points in three of its last four outings. They face a Radford squad (8-6) that is battle-tested after playing four overtime games already this season, including a 73-67 win at Hampton on Thursday. The Highlanders have won three of their last four, largely fueled by the explosive scoring of guard Joi Williams. Williams is averaging 23.3 points over her last three games, including a 36-point effort in a double-overtime win over Navy on Dec. 4. She scored 23 in the overtime victory at Hampton, while forward Georgia Simonsen added 12 points and 12 rebounds. Virginia Tech has dominated the series historically and presents a significant size and athleticism challenge for the visiting Highlanders. The Hokies’ defense, which has held opponents to 55 points or fewer in five games this season, will aim to contain Williams and force Radford into a half-court game. For Radford, keeping Virginia Tech off the offensive glass and managing turnovers will be critical to staying competitive. The Hokies have shown vulnerability in losses to Duke, BYU and James Madison, but have been formidable at home, winning all six contests in Blacksburg this season by an average of 31 points. This marks the final non-conference game for both teams before conference play begins in January. Virginia Tech opens Atlantic Coast Conference action on Jan. 1 against Miami, while Radford begins Big South play on Dec. 31 at Presbyterian. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m. EST on Sunday.
