TAMPA, Fla. (Interstat) — The Navy and South Florida women’s basketball teams will look to build momentum heading into conference play when they meet at the Sun Dome on Sunday. The Midshipmen (6-4) enter on a high note after an 82-47 rout of Christopher Newport last Sunday. Navy’s offense has shown potency, averaging 69.2 points per game, but has also endured recent tight losses, including two in overtime. A key catalyst for Navy is sophomore guard Zanai Barnett-Gay, who is coming off a 13-point, six-rebound performance in just 22 minutes against Christopher Newport. Over her last four games, she has averaged 14.3 points, 4.5 rebounds and 4.0 assists while logging heavy minutes. She will be central to Navy’s efforts against an American Athletic Conference opponent. The host South Florida Bulls (6-6) seek to rebound from a difficult 103-44 loss to top-ranked South Carolina on Thursday. Prior to that, the Bulls dropped an 87-58 decision at Vanderbilt. Their season has been a series of streaks, with wins in three straight earlier in November followed by their current three-game skid. Junior guard Katie Davidson is a player to watch for the Bulls. She scored 15 points with seven rebounds in a win over New Orleans on Nov. 30 but has been held to single digits in four of her last five outings. South Florida will need more consistent scoring to keep pace with Navy’s attack. This non-conference matchup represents a final tune-up before both teams dive into their respective league schedules. Navy begins Patriot League action on New Year’s Eve at Boston University, while South Florida opens AAC play at home against Rice on Dec. 30. The game tips off at 2 p.m. EST Sunday at the Sun Dome.
