Preview: Charleston Southern at No. -- North Carolina CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (Interstat) — The North Carolina women’s basketball team looks to continue its strong non-conference play when it hosts Charleston Southern at the Dean Smith Center on Sunday, Dec. 21. The Tar Heels (10-3) enter the matchup following a dominant 84-34 victory over UNC Wilmington on Wednesday. North Carolina has won eight of its last nine games, with its only loss in that stretch coming in overtime to Louisville. North Carolina is led by forward Ciera Toomey, who is coming off a 15-point, four-block performance against UNC Wilmington. Over her last seven games, Toomey has averaged 12.3 points and 3.1 blocks, providing a consistent interior presence on both ends of the floor. Charleston Southern (2-9) seeks to halt a three-game skid, most recently a 53-66 home loss to Furman on Friday. The Buccaneers have struggled against high-major competition this season, including losses to Clemson, Georgia Tech and East Carolina by an average of 33 points. The Buccaneers will rely on guard Caelan Ellis, their leading scorer in four of the last seven games. Ellis is averaging 12.4 points per game during that stretch, including a 16-point effort in a win over South Carolina State on Nov. 22. This game marks the final non-conference tune-up for both teams before holiday breaks. North Carolina begins Atlantic Coast Conference play at Boston College on Dec. 29. Charleston Southern opens Big South Conference play at Georgia on Dec. 29. Historically, North Carolina has dominated the series. The Tar Heels are 5-0 all-time against the Buccaneers, with an average margin of victory of 47.2 points. Their last meeting was a 100-42 North Carolina win on Dec. 19, 2018. Sunday’s contest tips off at 2 p.m. EST. North Carolina is 6-0 at home this season, while Charleston Southern is 0-6 in true road games.
