Preview: Southern Lady Jaguars at SMU Mustangs ABILENE, Texas (Interstat) — The Southern Lady Jaguars look to snap a two-game skid when they visit the SMU Mustangs in a nonconference women’s basketball matchup Sunday at Moody Coliseum. Southern (4-6) enters following a 60-77 road loss at Baylor on Thursday. The Lady Jaguars showed resilience in a recent three-game win streak, including a 63-57 victory at Arizona on Dec. 3, but have dropped their last two. Guard Jaylia Reed has been a consistent contributor, averaging 7.8 points over her last six games. She scored 11 points in 25 minutes against Baylor. SMU (6-6) arrives with momentum after a narrow 73-69 road win at Sam Houston on Friday. The Mustangs have alternated wins and losses over their past six contests. Guard Paulina Paris is coming off a season-high 39 minutes in that victory, scoring 18 points and dishing three assists. She has averaged 11.0 points per game over her last seven outings. The game represents a final nonconference tune-up for both programs before league play begins in January. Southern will open Southwestern Athletic Conference action at home against Prairie View on Jan. 1. SMU, which joins the Atlantic Coast Conference this season, faces a daunting league opener at Louisville on the same date. Southern’s schedule has been challenging, with five of its six losses coming against Power Five opponents, including then-Iowa and then-UCLA. SMU has faced a similarly tough slate, with defeats coming against ranked opponents Texas Tech and Syracuse. The Mustangs will rely on Paris and forward Jzaniya Harriel, who added 16 points in the win over Sam Houston. Southern will counter with Reed and forward Demya Porter, who had 10 points and a block against Baylor. Tipoff is set for Sunday afternoon. SMU holds a 3-2 all-time series advantage, with the teams last meeting in 2012.
