SAN JOSE, Calif. (Interstat) — The Sacramento State Hornets and San Jose State Spartans will meet in a nonconference women’s basketball game Sunday at the Event Center, with both teams looking to build momentum before entering their respective league schedules. Sacramento State (6-6) enters having split its last two contests, following a 102-42 rout of Simpson with a 55-61 road loss at San Francisco on Wednesday. The Hornets have shown a balanced attack, with Benthe Versteeg, Rubi Gray and Keanna Salave’a all scoring in double figures against the Dons. Versteeg, a guard, has been a consistent facilitator, averaging 5.0 assists over her last five games. San Jose State (1-10) seeks to halt a six-game skid after a 60-83 defeat at Wyoming on Wednesday. The Spartans’ lone win came decisively against Division II Cal St. Monterey Bay on Dec. 11. Forward Carla Fuster led the team with 11 points against Wyoming, providing a bright spot in a challenging start to the season. The matchup presents a contrast in trajectories. The Hornets have been competitive in most outings, with four of their six losses coming by single digits, including an overtime defeat to UC Davis. The Spartans, meanwhile, have struggled against a tough schedule, with their last eight losses all coming by double-digit margins. This game serves as a final nonconference tune-up for both programs. Sacramento State opens Big Sky Conference play at home on Jan. 1 against Idaho State. San Jose State begins Mountain West Conference action on the road at Utah State on Dec. 31, following a home game against Grand Canyon on Dec. 28. Tipoff is scheduled for Sunday afternoon.
