RICHMOND, Va. (Interstat) — A surging Richmond team riding a four-game win streak will face a Penn State squad looking to build momentum in a nonconference women’s basketball clash Sunday at the 2025-26 WBB 4 Tha Culture Holiday Classic in Glen Allen, Virginia. The Spiders (10-3) enter off a 72-58 victory over Alabama A&M on Saturday, their third win in a week. The Lady Lions (7-4) halted a three-game skid with a 78-66 home win over VCU, also on Saturday. Richmond’s success is fueled by forward Maggie Doogan, who has been a dominant all-around force. Over her last seven games, Doogan is averaging 22.7 points, 6.4 rebounds and 4.7 assists. She posted 15 points, seven rebounds and six assists in Saturday’s win, following a 26-point, 11-rebound performance against Bethune-Cookman on Dec. 16. Penn State will counter with center Gracie Merkle, who notched a double-double of 13 points and 12 rebounds against VCU. Merkle has been a consistent interior presence, scoring in double figures in five of her last six contests, including a 26-point, 12-rebound effort in a win at San Diego State on Nov. 24. The Spiders have shown offensive firepower, scoring 76 or more points in five of their 10 wins. Their three losses have come against Fairfield, Texas Christian and a narrow defeat to Princeton. Penn State’s schedule has been challenging, with losses to ranked opponents South Carolina and Nebraska, along with Arizona State. This neutral-site matchup serves as a final tune-up before both teams dive into conference play. Richmond begins Atlantic 10 action on Dec. 31 at Rhode Island. Penn State faces a daunting stretch, traveling to face Iowa on Dec. 28 before opening Big Ten play at home against UCLA on New Year’s Eve. Sunday’s game is scheduled for a 2 p.m. EST tip-off.
