CHEROKEE, N.C. (Interstat) — A surging Mississippi squad looks to continue its dominant non-conference play when it hosts Old Dominion in a women’s basketball matchup Sunday at Cherokee Arena. The Rebels (11-1) have won five straight since their only loss, a narrow 61-60 defeat at Kansas State on Dec. 7. Their offense has been explosive during the win streak, averaging 89.2 points per game and eclipsing the 100-point mark twice. They are coming off a 102-34 rout of Mississippi Valley State on Wednesday. Old Dominion (7-4) seeks to rebound from a lopsided 81-59 home loss to Troy on Wednesday. The Lady Monarchs had won two straight prior to that defeat but have struggled against high-major competition this season, with losses to Oregon, Texas Tech and Troy by an average of 28 points. Mississippi is led by standout guard Cotie McMahon, who has been on a scoring tear. She dropped 24 points in two of her last three games, including in the win over Mississippi Valley State, and is averaging 21.8 points over her last five contests. Old Dominion will counter with forward Riley Stack, a key defensive presence. Stack leads the team in blocks and is coming off a nine-rebound performance against Troy. Her ability to protect the rim will be crucial against Mississippi’s high-powered attack. The game is a neutral-site contest in North Carolina before both teams break for the holiday. Mississippi will look to maintain momentum before opening Southeastern Conference play next week. Old Dominion aims for a signature win to bolster its resume before Sun Belt Conference action begins. Tip-off is set for Sunday, Dec. 21.
