OAKLAND, Mich. (Interstat) — The Oakland women’s basketball team faces a formidable nonconference test Sunday when it visits the Michigan Wolverines at Crisler Center. The Golden Grizzlies (3-7) enter on a three-game skid, most recently falling 59-56 at Loyola Chicago on Monday. Oakland has struggled offensively during the stretch, averaging just 56 points per game in the losses. They will need a standout performance from guard Lianna Baxter to challenge the Wolverines (9-1). Baxter is coming off a team-high 12 points, five rebounds and two assists against Loyola and scored 18 in a narrow loss to Wright State on Dec. 3. Her consistency will be crucial against a deep Michigan defense. The Wolverines, whose only loss came in a tight 72-69 game at then-Connecticut, have been dominant otherwise, winning their last five games by an average of 38.2 points. They are coming off an 85-59 victory over Akron on Dec. 13, where freshman forward Ashley Sofilkanich led the team with 17 points in just 18 minutes off the bench. Sofilkanich has provided efficient scoring punch, averaging 10.3 points over her last four games in limited minutes. Michigan’s balanced attack features four players averaging double figures, led by Syla Swords (15.8 ppg) and Olivia Olson (14.3 ppg). The Wolverines lead the nation in field goal percentage defense, holding opponents to 30.7% shooting. Oakland has faced a tough schedule, including a 102-41 loss at Michigan State last month. The Golden Grizzlies will look to improve their ball security after committing 17 turnovers in their last outing. This is the final nonconference tune-up for both teams before holiday breaks. Oakland opens Horizon League play at Robert Morris on Dec. 29. Michigan begins a challenging two-game Pac-12 road swing at Oregon the same day. Sunday’s tipoff is set for 2 p.m. EST.
