FARMVILLE, Va. (Interstat) — The Longwood Lancers, riding a strong start to the season, will look to continue their momentum when they host the struggling UNC Wilmington Seahawks in a nonconference women’s basketball game Sunday at Willet Hall. Longwood (8-4) enters the contest having won four of its last five games, including a narrow 67-66 road victory at Elon on Dec. 14. The Lancers have shown offensive firepower, averaging 73.8 points per game and scoring 90 points in a win over UNC Pembroke on Dec. 7. A key contributor has been guard Jaci Bolden, who is coming off a 13-point performance against Elon. Bolden has scored in double figures in three of her last five outings, providing a consistent spark off the bench. UNC Wilmington (3-6) seeks to halt a three-game skid, most recently a 34-84 loss at North Carolina on Wednesday. The Seahawks have struggled offensively during the losing streak, averaging just 55 points per game. The Seahawks will rely on guard Rori Cox, their most dynamic scorer. Cox poured in a season-high 20 points with eight rebounds and five assists in a win over Queens (N.C.) on Nov. 30. Containing her will be a focal point for the Longwood defense. The matchup pits Longwood’s balanced attack against a UNC Wilmington team searching for consistency. The Lancers have four players averaging at least 8.5 points per game, led by Amor Harris (12.3 ppg). UNC Wilmington, aside from Cox’s 12.0 points per game, has had limited secondary scoring in recent losses. This game serves as a final nonconference tune-up for both programs before league play begins in January. Longwood will open Big South Conference action on Jan. 3 against Presbyterian. UNC Wilmington begins Coastal Athletic Association play on Jan. 2 against Northeastern. Tipoff is scheduled for Sunday afternoon.
