ELON, N.C. (Interstat) — Two teams seeking momentum before conference play begins will meet Sunday when the Norfolk State Spartans visit the Elon Phoenix in a nonconference women’s basketball game at Schar Center. Norfolk State (5-9) enters on a two-game skid, including a 45-79 road loss to Ohio State on Thursday. The Spartans have faced a rigorous schedule, with four of their losses coming against Power Five opponents. Elon (3-7) has also struggled recently, dropping its last four contests, most recently a 50-54 defeat at UNC Greensboro on Wednesday. The matchup features a key battle in the backcourt, where Norfolk State’s dynamic guard Jasha Clinton will look to control the tempo. Clinton is coming off an 18-point performance against Ohio State and has been a consistent scorer, pouring in 28 points in a narrow loss to Campbell on Dec. 15. She averages 15.6 points per game over her last seven contests and will be the primary focus of the Spartan offense. Elon will counter with forward Quinzia Fulmore, who has provided steady interior production. Fulmore scored 12 points against UNC Greensboro and has reached double figures in three of her last five games. Her efficiency in the paint will be crucial for a Phoenix team that has averaged just 57.6 points during its four-game losing streak. Both teams have endured offensive droughts. The Spartans were held under 50 points in losses to Ohio State and Appalachian State this season, while the Phoenix have not surpassed 67 points in any game during their current slide. Defensive execution and limiting turnovers will be pivotal. This game represents a final tune-up before each team dives into its respective conference schedule in January. Norfolk State begins Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference play on Jan. 3, while Elon opens Coastal Athletic Association action on Jan. 2. Tip-off is scheduled for Sunday afternoon. The all-time series between the programs is tied 1-1.
