CHARLOTTE, N.C. (Interstat) — The Charlotte 49ers and East Tennessee State Lady Buccaneers will look to build momentum heading into conference play when they meet in a nonconference women’s basketball game Sunday at Halton Arena. Both teams enter the matchup on the heels of decisive home victories. Charlotte (6-6) routed Winthrop 81-58 on Wednesday, powered by a double-double from Asianae Nicholson. The forward tallied 12 points and 13 rebounds in the win. East Tennessee State (5-8) is coming off a 59-37 win over Gardner-Webb on Thursday, where Carmen Richardson and Daniela López each scored 10 points. Nicholson has been a key contributor for the 49ers, averaging 7.5 points and 7.8 rebounds over her last six games. Her presence inside will challenge an ETSU squad that has struggled offensively at times this season. For the Lady Buccaneers, guard Carmen Richardson has been a consistent performer, scoring in double figures in three of her last eight contests. ETSU will need her offensive production to counter a Charlotte team that has shown scoring prowess, averaging 71 points in its six wins compared to 59 in its losses. The game represents a final nonconference tune-up before both teams dive into their respective league schedules. Charlotte begins American Athletic Conference play on Jan. 3 against UAB, while ETSU opens Southern Conference action on Jan. 8 against Furman. Historically, Charlotte has protected its home court well at Halton Arena, posting a 5-2 record there this season. East Tennessee State is 4-3 at home but just 1-5 in true road games. Tipoff is set for Sunday afternoon.
