Preview: UMBC Retrievers at American Eagles WASHINGTON (Interstat) — Two teams seeking momentum before conference play begins will meet Sunday when the Maryland-Baltimore County Retrievers visit the American Eagles in a nonconference women’s basketball game at Bender Arena. The Retrievers (4-6) enter having dropped their last outing, a 57-60 home loss to Loyola Maryland on Dec. 9, despite 15 points from guard Jade Tillman. UMBC had won its two prior games against Morgan State and Presbyterian by an average of 19 points. American (1-9) looks to snap a seven-game skid. The Eagles fell 63-69 at VCU on Dec. 16, a game in which guard Molly Driscoll scored a season-high 24 points. Their lone victory came in the season opener against Delaware State. Tillman has been a consistent performer for UMBC, averaging 12.2 points over her last five games. She posted a double-double with 7 points and 12 rebounds at Florida International on Nov. 28. Driscoll provides the primary offensive spark for American, having scored 24 and 29 points in two of her last six contests. However, the Eagles have struggled offensively as a unit, failing to reach 55 points in five of their nine losses. Defensively, both teams have shown recent flashes. UMBC held three opponents below 60 points this season, while American kept Drexel to 55 in a narrow loss on Dec. 3. This matchup represents a final tune-up before each team dives into its conference schedule. UMBC begins America East play on Jan. 8 at Maine, while American opens Patriot League action on Jan. 3 against Boston University. Sunday’s game tips off at 2 p.m. EST.
