SOUTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. (Interstat) — A surging Rhode Island women’s basketball team looks to continue its strong non-conference play when it hosts Wagner on Friday afternoon at the Ryan Center. The Rams (9-2) enter the contest having won seven of their last eight games, including a 57-51 road victory over in-state rival Providence on Dec. 10. Rhode Island’s success has been fueled by a balanced attack and stout defense, holding opponents to an average of 55.5 points during their current three-game win streak. Guard Brooklyn Gray has been a consistent offensive catalyst for the Rams. The senior is averaging 15.4 points over her last five games, including an 18-point performance in a win at Maine on Dec. 7. Wagner (3-6) seeks to build momentum from a 46-34 road win at Rider on Dec. 13, a victory that snapped a three-game skid. The Seahawks have struggled offensively against higher-caliber competition, scoring 42 points or fewer in four of their six losses. The Seahawks will rely on forward Lijirin Doyinsola Modesayor, who is coming off a dominant performance against Rider with 16 points and eight rebounds in 28 minutes. Modesayor has shown scoring versatility, reaching double figures in three of her last five contests. This matchup presents a stark contrast in trajectories. Rhode Island, with wins over power-conference foe North Carolina State and a solid Atlantic 10 start, is positioning itself for postseason consideration. Wagner, navigating a challenging early schedule, views this as a final major test before Northeast Conference play begins in January. The game is the final non-conference tune-up for both squads before holiday breaks. Rhode Island opens A-10 play at home against Richmond on Dec. 31, while Wagner hosts New Jersey City on Dec. 30. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. EST.
