LEXINGTON, Ky. (Interstat) — A surging Kentucky women’s basketball team, ranked among the nation’s best, will look to extend its dominant start when it hosts struggling Wright State on Friday night at Rupp Arena. The Wildcats (11-1) have won five straight since their only loss, a 74-66 setback at Maryland on Nov. 26. Kentucky has been overpowering at home, winning by an average of 55.3 points in four games at Rupp Arena this season. Guard Tonie Morgan has been the catalyst for Kentucky’s high-powered offense. The standout senior is coming off an 18-point, nine-assist performance in a 77-69 road win at Belmont on Dec. 14. Over her last five games, Morgan is averaging 17.4 points and 7.6 assists, including a double-double of 12 points and 11 assists against Central Michigan on Dec. 7. “Tonie sets the tone for us on both ends,” Kentucky coach Kyra Elzy said. “Her ability to create for herself and her teammates makes our offense go.” The Wildcats will face a Wright State team (5-8) mired in a three-game losing streak, most recently a 65-46 defeat at Youngstown State on Tuesday. The Raiders have found consistent offense difficult to generate, averaging just 52.7 points during their current skid. Wright State will rely on guard Abbie Riddle to provide a spark. She led the team with seven points in the loss to Youngstown State and scored nine in a narrow 65-60 defeat at Canisius on Dec. 12. The Raiders’ last win was a 61-57 victory over Oakland on Dec. 3. “We have to be tougher with the ball and execute against pressure,” Wright State coach Kari Hoffman said. “Kentucky is elite in transition, so managing possessions is critical.” This non-conference matchup is a final tune-up for both teams before holiday breaks. Kentucky will host Hofstra on Dec. 28 before opening Southeastern Conference play at LSU on Jan. 1. Wright State’s next game is at home against Green Bay on Dec. 30 to resume Horizon League action. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. EST Friday at Rupp Arena.
