PHILADELPHIA (Interstat) — The Temple Owls look to build on a decisive victory and climb above .500 when they host the struggling Coppin State Eagles in a nonconference women’s basketball game Friday at Liacouras Center. Temple (5-5) is coming off its most complete performance of the season, an 88-63 rout of VCU on Dec. 13. The Owls’ offense was powered by junior guard Kaylah Turner, who scored a season-high 29 points and dished out six assists. Turner is averaging 20.3 points over her last three games and will be the focal point for a Temple team seeking consistency after alternating wins and losses over its past six contests. Coppin State (2-10) arrives having lost eight of its last nine, including a 65-72 defeat at William & Mary last Saturday. The Eagles have faced a rigorous early schedule with road losses to power conference opponents Tennessee, Oklahoma and Michigan State. Guard Khila Morris has been a bright spot, averaging 14.0 points over her last six games. She scored 19 points with four assists in the loss to William & Mary, and her backcourt battle with Turner will be a key matchup. Temple’s offense, which averages 69.2 points, will test a Coppin State defense that has allowed 74.2 points per game and surrendered 100 points in a November loss at Oklahoma. The Owls have shown balance behind Turner, with Savannah Curry (16 points vs. VCU) and Jaleesa Molina (11 points, six assists) providing support. For the Eagles, finding secondary scoring behind Morris and Erin Henry, who had 17 points against William & Mary, will be critical. Coppin State has been held under 60 points in eight of its 10 losses this season. This is the final nonconference tune-up for Temple before American Athletic Conference play begins in January. Coppin State continues a challenging road stretch before returning home for MEAC competition next month. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. EST.
