NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (Interstat) — The Furman Paladins and Charleston Southern Buccaneers will meet Friday in a nonconference women’s basketball matchup at CSU Field House, with both teams looking to build momentum before the holiday break. Furman (5-6) enters riding high after a dominant 110-36 victory over Mars Hill on Sunday. The Paladins’ offense was led by a career performance from forward Clare Coyle, who scored 31 points in just 21 minutes. Coyle has been a consistent force, averaging 18.2 points over her last five games, including an 18-point effort in a win over Presbyterian on Dec. 3. Charleston Southern (2-8) seeks to rebound from a 78-52 home loss to Clemson on Wednesday. Guard Asha Sra has been a bright spot for the Buccaneers, leading the team with 16 points and five rebounds in that contest. Sra has scored in double figures in four of her last six games, showcasing her ability to contribute across multiple categories. The game presents a contrast in recent trajectories. Furman has won three of its last four, with the lone loss coming on the road at Georgia Southern. Charleston Southern has struggled, dropping seven of its last eight, with the sole win in that stretch coming against Allen University on Dec. 1. Furman’s offense, which exploded for a season-high 110 points last time out, will test a Charleston Southern defense that has allowed an average of 71.3 points per game this season. The Paladins will also rely on guards Alyssa Ervin and Lauren Bailey, who combined for 34 points against Mars Hill. For the Buccaneers, containing Coyle will be a primary focus as they look to improve their defensive consistency. Support for Sra will need to come from players like Thelma Barbitch, who added 12 points against Clemson.
