BUFFALO, N.Y. (Interstat) — Two Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference women’s basketball teams seeking momentum will meet Friday when the Saint Peter’s Peacocks visit the Canisius Golden Griffins at Koessler Athletic Center. Both teams enter the nonconference matchup with struggling overall records. Saint Peter’s is 1-8, while Canisius sits at 2-7. The game offers each a final opportunity to build confidence before the bulk of their MAAC schedules resume in the new year. The Peacocks are mired in a four-game losing streak, most recently falling 57-34 to Fairleigh Dickinson on Dec. 10. Their offense has been anemic during the skid, failing to reach 45 points in any of those losses. Saint Peter’s will rely on guard De’Naya Rippey to provide a spark. The standout player has averaged 13.8 points over her last five games, including a 15-point, five-rebound effort in a loss to Army on Dec. 3. Canisius snapped a five-game slide with a 65-60 home victory over Wright State on Dec. 12. The Golden Griffins’ offense runs through dynamic guard Shariah Gailes, who erupted for 20 points in that win and a season-high 28 points in a victory over Mercyhurst on Nov. 30. Her scoring prowess will be central to the Griffins’ game plan. Defensive intensity may decide this contest. Saint Peter’s has allowed an average of 62.1 points per game, while Canisius has surrendered 74.2. Whichever team can establish consistency on both ends of the floor will find a crucial advantage. Friday’s game is scheduled for a 7 p.m. tip-off. Canisius will host Siena on Sunday, while Saint Peter’s travels to face Niagara.
