Extended Summary
ATHENS, Ga. (Interstat) — The Georgia women’s basketball team methodically extended its perfect start to the season Monday afternoon, using a dominant defensive performance to pull away from North Carolina A&T for a 77-49 victory at Stegeman Coliseum. In front of 5,425 fans, the Bulldogs improved to 11-0 overall, while the visiting Aggies fell to 3-6. The game was never in serious doubt after the opening minutes, as Georgia established a consistent rhythm and North Carolina A&T struggled with its offensive execution throughout. The Bulldogs led 18-15 after the first quarter, extended the advantage to 36-26 by halftime, and took a 54-38 lead into the final period before closing with a 23-point fourth quarter. The most important part of the game was Georgia’s relentless defensive pressure and its ability to capitalize on North Carolina A&T’s mistakes. The Bulldogs converted 21 Aggie turnovers into 26 points, a stark contrast to the 9 points North Carolina A&T managed off Georgia’s 16 turnovers. This disparity in points off turnovers was the central narrative of the contest, as Georgia’s defense repeatedly created transition opportunities that its offense efficiently finished. Georgia guard Dani Carnegie, a 5-foot-9 sophomore from Mount Vernon, New York, was the game’s standout performer. She recorded a double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds, adding 6 assists in 36 minutes of action. Her all-around play orchestrated the Bulldogs’ offense and helped stifle the Aggies on the perimeter. She was complemented by guard Rylie Theuerkauf, who scored 17 points, and forward Zhen Craft, who anchored the paint with 9 points, 9 rebounds and 4 blocked shots. Forward Mia Woolfolk added 8 points and 6 rebounds. For North Carolina A&T, forward Darrionna Howard led the way with 11 points. Guard Jordan Brown pulled down 9 rebounds but was limited to 4 points on 1-of-7 shooting from the field. Statistically, the game was defined by Georgia’s superior efficiency. The Bulldogs shot 47.2 percent from the field, making 25 of 53 attempts, and were particularly effective from beyond the arc, hitting 8 of 15 three-pointers for a 53.3 percent clip. They were also nearly flawless from the free throw line, converting 19 of 22 attempts. North Carolina A&T, meanwhile, endured a difficult shooting night. The Aggies made just 19 of 60 field goal attempts, a 31.7 percent rate, and connected on only 5 of 15 three-pointers. Their struggles were most acute at the free throw line, where they shot 6 of 17. The Aggies’ offensive rating of 68.0 points per 100 possessions underscored their challenges against Georgia’s defense. Despite the loss, North Carolina A&T competed on the glass, out-rebounding Georgia 45-38 overall and securing 12 offensive rebounds. The Aggies also recorded 12 steals, matching Georgia’s total, but could not translate those defensive plays into consistent scoring. Georgia’s victory was its second in a row against a team from North Carolina, following a win over North Carolina earlier in the month. The Bulldogs will look to continue their unbeaten run Friday against VCU in Richmond, Virginia. North Carolina A&T returns home to face Ferrum on Saturday.
