Hokies Host Lady Buccaneers in Nonconference Finale BLACKSBURG, Va. (Interstat) — The Virginia Tech women’s basketball team looks to carry momentum into its Atlantic Coast Conference schedule when it hosts East Tennessee State in a nonconference finale on Sunday at Cassell Coliseum. The Hokies (8-3) are coming off a dominant 92-36 victory over Presbyterian on Wednesday, where they shot 56.7% from the field. Guard Leila Wells led the way with 13 points and five assists in 31 minutes. Virginia Tech’s season has featured notable wins over Florida and Oregon State, but also three losses to power-conference opponents Duke, BYU and James Madison. East Tennessee State (4-7) arrives after snapping a two-game skid with a 63-53 home win over UNC Asheville on Thursday. The Lady Buccaneers are led by guard Anala Nelson, who erupted for 23 points in that victory. Nelson has been a consistent offensive threat, scoring in double figures in five of her last eight games, including a 17-point effort at Tennessee Tech and a 14-point game at Memphis. The matchup presents a stark contrast in trajectories. Virginia Tech, receiving votes in the latest AP Top 25 poll, has used a balanced attack and stout defense, holding opponents to 57.5 points per game. East Tennessee State, seeking its first road win of the season (0-4), averages just 55.5 points offensively and will need another high-output game from Nelson to challenge the Hokies. This game concludes the nonconference slate for both programs. Virginia Tech opens ACC play at Florida State on Dec. 18. East Tennessee State returns home to face Gardner-Webb on the same date before beginning Southern Conference action in January. Sunday’s tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. EST.
