SAN DIEGO (Interstat) — Two teams seeking momentum before conference play begins will meet Sunday when the UC Riverside women’s basketball team visits San Diego at Jenny Craig Pavilion. The Highlanders (2-6) enter off their most decisive win of the season, a 63-46 home victory over Cal Poly on Dec. 6. UC Riverside will look to build its first winning streak of the year behind guard Hannah Wickstrom, who scored 22 points in that win and is averaging 18.8 points over her last five games. That stretch includes a 30-point performance in a win over Cal Lutheran on Nov. 29. San Diego (4-7) aims to rebound from a 74-46 road loss at Wisconsin on Dec. 10. The Toreros have shown flashes, including a 70-66 home win over Utah State on Dec. 7, but have struggled for consistency. Guard Kylie Ray has been a bright spot, leading the team with 17 points in the loss to the Badgers and posting a 21-point, 8-rebound effort at Colorado State in November. Both teams have faced challenging non-conference slates. UC Riverside’s six losses have come by an average of 13.8 points, while San Diego’s seven defeats have been by an average margin of 18.3 points. The matchup could hinge on which team can better capitalize on the other’s season-long difficulties; the Highlanders have been held under 60 points in five of their eight games, and the Toreros have surpassed 70 points only twice. Sunday’s contest is the final non-conference home game for San Diego before West Coast Conference play starts in January. UC Riverside begins Big West Conference action on Jan. 1. For both squads, this game represents a critical opportunity to gain confidence and correct flaws before the league schedule intensifies. Tip-off is set for Sunday afternoon.
