(Interstat) — The La Salle Explorers look to rebound from a tough loss when they visit the Maryland-Eastern Shore Hawks in a nonconference women’s basketball game Sunday at the William P. Hytche Center. La Salle (6-3) enters having dropped two of its last three, including a 65-52 home defeat to Penn last Sunday. The Explorers’ offense, which averages 68.2 points per game, will rely on guard Aryss Macktoon. She scored 15 points in the loss to Penn and had a 21-point performance in a win over VCU on Dec. 3. Maryland-Eastern Shore (6-6) is seeking consistency after a challenging stretch against power-conference opponents. The Hawks are coming off a 90-37 road loss to Oklahoma last Sunday, part of a 1-2 road trip that included a 56-52 victory at Wichita State. Forward Lainey Allen provides a steady interior presence, averaging near a double-double. She posted 12 points and 10 rebounds in a win at Mount Saint Mary’s on Nov. 26. The Hawks have shown resilience at home, boasting a 4-1 record in Princess Anne this season, with the lone loss to Princeton. Their defense allows just 58.8 points per game at the Hytche Center. La Salle’s recent struggles have centered on scoring, as the team failed to reach 55 points in both of its losses this past week. Beyond Macktoon, backcourt mate Ashleigh Connor, who dished out seven assists against Penn, will be key to facilitating the offense. For UMES, containing Macktoon on the perimeter and leveraging Allen’s rebounding against a smaller La Salle lineup will be critical. The Hawks have faced a tougher overall schedule, including games against Oklahoma, Virginia and San Diego State. This marks the first meeting between the programs since 2019. Following this contest, La Salle travels to Delaware on Wednesday, while UMES hosts Towson. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m. EST Sunday.
