ST. LOUIS (Interstat) — The surging Missouri Tigers look to rebound from a rare loss when they visit the Saint Louis Billikens in a regional women’s basketball matchup Sunday at Chaifetz Arena. Missouri (9-3) enters having won seven of its last nine games but is coming off a 70-62 home defeat to Illinois on Wednesday. The Tigers’ offense, averaging 74.8 points per game, runs through sophomore guard Grace Slaughter. She is averaging 18.2 points over her last five contests, including a 33-point, 9-rebound performance against Northwestern on Nov. 29. Slaughter scored 19 in the loss to Illinois. Saint Louis (4-6) has shown recent improvement, winning two of its last three games, including a 72-55 victory over Evansville last Sunday. The Billikens are led by center Alyssa Koerkenmeier, who provides interior defense and scoring. She posted 12 points, four assists and three blocks against Evansville. Guard Zhykera Brown, who scored a team-high 16 points in that game, offers a perimeter scoring threat. The Billikens have struggled defensively, allowing 73.2 points per game, which could be a problem against Missouri’s high-powered attack. Saint Louis will need to control the tempo and find consistent scoring beyond Koerkenmeier and Brown to challenge their regional rivals. This game represents a final nonconference test for both teams before holiday breaks. Missouri begins Southeastern Conference play on Jan. 1, while Saint Louis opens Atlantic 10 action on Dec. 31. Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. CST Sunday.
