STONY BROOK, N.Y. (Interstat) — The Duquesne Dukes look to get back on track when they visit the struggling Stony Brook Seawolves in a nonconference women’s basketball matchup Sunday at Island Federal Credit Union Arena. Duquesne (6-4) enters having dropped two straight, including a narrow 74-72 loss at Eastern Michigan on Tuesday. The Dukes have relied on a balanced attack but will lean on guard Gabby Grantham-Medley, who is coming off a 17-point, four-rebound performance in that defeat. Over her last three games, she is averaging 15.7 points and 4.7 assists. The Dukes’ season has been marked by offensive inconsistency, scoring 55 and 60 points in their two other recent losses but topping 69 points in all six of their victories. Stony Brook (3-8) seeks to halt a four-game skid, most recently a 73-42 home loss to Saint John’s on Wednesday. The Seawolves have struggled mightily on offense, failing to reach 55 points in five of their eight losses. Guard Diaka Berete has been a bright spot, scoring 17 points in the loss to Saint John’s and pouring in 21 in a win over New Jersey City on Dec. 1. Defense will be a primary concern for the Seawolves, who have allowed an average of 66.2 points per game during their current losing streak. Containing Grantham-Medley and Duquesne’s perimeter game will be critical. This game represents a final nonconference tune-up for both sides before holiday breaks. Duquesne opens Atlantic 10 play at Dayton on Jan. 3, while Stony Brook begins Coastal Athletic Association action at Hampton on Jan. 2. Tip-off is set for Sunday afternoon.
