MINNEAPOLIS (Interstat) — The Minnesota Golden Gophers, riding a potent offense, will host the struggling Wyoming Cowgirls in a nonconference women’s basketball matchup Sunday at Williams Arena. Minnesota (7-3) enters with momentum after a dominant 82-44 victory over Alabama A&M on Wednesday. The Golden Gophers’ season has been highlighted by a high-scoring, double-overtime thriller against Maryland, a 100-99 loss on Dec. 7. Their attack is fueled by guard Grace Grocholski, who is coming off a 31-point, 6-assist performance in that marathon game and averaged 14.8 points over her last five contests. Wyoming (3-5) seeks to snap a two-game skid after a 46-58 loss at Colorado on Dec. 7. The Cowgirls have struggled offensively in defeats, failing to reach 50 points in three of their five losses this season. Guard Payton Muma, who posted 5 points, 4 rebounds and 3 assists against Colorado, will be a key facilitator. Teammates Henna Sandvik and Malene Pedersen, who each scored 11 points in the Colorado game, provide additional scoring options. The Golden Gophers have been formidable at home, winning all five contests in Minneapolis by an average margin of 41.2 points. Their defense has held opponents to 45 points or fewer in four of those wins. For Wyoming, this game begins a challenging road stretch before Mountain West Conference play. The Cowgirls’ victories have come against South Dakota, Chadron State and Long Beach State. The game tips off at 2 p.m. CST Sunday. Minnesota will look to leverage its home-court advantage and offensive firepower, while Wyoming aims to improve its offensive consistency and secure a statement road win before returning home to face San Jose State on Dec. 17. Minnesota travels to Drake on Dec. 21.
