WASHINGTON (Interstat) — A struggling American University women’s basketball team seeks to halt a six-game skid when it visits crosstown foe George Washington on Sunday afternoon at the Charles E. Smith Center. The Eagles (1-7) have not won since their season opener against Delaware State on Nov. 8, most recently falling 73-60 to William & Mary on Dec. 7. The Revolutionaries (6-5) enter on a three-game winning streak, including a 63-59 road victory at Delaware on Dec. 10. American will lean on guard Anna Rescifina, who is coming off a season-high 13 points, five rebounds and three assists in 31 minutes against William & Mary. Over her last six games, Rescifina has averaged 7.0 points and 3.2 assists. George Washington counters with forward Sara Lewis, who has been instrumental during the win streak. Lewis erupted for a career-high 22 points in the win at Delaware. In the three victories, she has averaged 13.7 points and 4.3 rebounds. The Eagles have struggled offensively during their losing streak, failing to reach 62 points in any of the six defeats. Rebounding will be a key focus after Charlotte Tuhy grabbed 10 boards in the last outing. The Revolutionaries have found success with defense, holding opponents to 48 and 42 points, respectively, in wins over Brown and Dayton earlier this month. They will look to exploit an American team averaging just 54.4 points per game. This nonconference matchup is the final tune-up for both teams before holiday breaks. American visits VCU on Dec. 16, while George Washington hosts Northwestern on Dec. 21. Tipoff is set for Sunday, Dec. 14, in the nation’s capital.
