ELON, N.C. (Interstat) — The Longwood Lancers, riding a wave of offensive momentum, will visit the Elon Phoenix in a nonconference women’s basketball matchup Sunday at Schar Center. Longwood (7-4) enters having won three of its last four, including a 90-62 rout of UNC Pembroke on Dec. 7. The Lancers average 78.5 points per game but have shown vulnerability on the road, suffering lopsided losses at Mississippi and Virginia last month. Elon (3-5) seeks consistency after a 53-64 loss at East Carolina last Sunday. The Phoenix have struggled offensively, averaging just 58.6 points, and will face a Longwood defense allowing an average of 68.2. A key matchup will feature standout guards. Longwood’s Malea Brown is coming off an 18-point performance and has been a versatile contributor, posting a double-double with 17 points and 12 rebounds in a narrow loss to Troy on Dec. 3. Elon will counter with Ashanti Fox, who leads her team in assists and scored 13 points with six assists against East Carolina. For Longwood, secondary scoring from Jesstynie Scott (17 points vs. UNC Pembroke) and Otaifo Esenabhalu (15 points) will be crucial. Elon needs more production from LaNae’ Corbett, who had 14 points last game, and Quinzia Fulmore. The Phoenix hold a 3-2 home record, with wins over Presbyterian and in overtime against East Tennessee State. Longwood’s road record stands at 1-3. This game represents a final nonconference tune-up before both teams dive into their respective league schedules in January. Longwood will host UNC Wilmington on Dec. 21, while Elon travels to UNC Greensboro on Dec. 17. Tipoff is set for Sunday afternoon.
