Preview: Green Bay Phoenix at Washington Huskies SEATTLE (Interstat) — Two of the nation’s hotter women’s basketball teams will meet Saturday when the Washington Huskies host the Green Bay Phoenix at Hec Edmundson Pavilion. Washington (8-1) has been dominant at home, winning its first five games in Seattle by an average margin of 36.2 points. The Huskies’ lone blemish came in their last outing, a 59-50 road loss to Southern California on Dec. 7. They are led by guard Avery Howell, who has scored in double figures in six of the last seven games. Howell is averaging 15.4 points over that stretch, including a 16-point effort in the loss to USC. Green Bay (8-3) enters on a three-game winning streak, most recently defeating IU Indy 74-47 on the road Wednesday. The Phoenix have built their record on a stout defense, holding opponents to an average of 56.5 points per game. Guard Ellie Buzzelle, coming off a 12-point performance against IU Indy, provides a key backcourt presence. The Phoenix’s three losses have come against Power Five opponents: Wisconsin, North Carolina State and Richmond. The matchup pits Washington’s high-scoring offense, averaging 70.2 points per game, against Green Bay’s disciplined defensive system. The Huskies will look to control the tempo behind Howell and guard Sayvia Sellers, who scored 20 points against USC. For Green Bay, sustaining its recent offensive balance will be critical. In the win over IU Indy, Maddy Skorupski dished out seven assists and Kamy Peppler added 11 points alongside Buzzelle’s scoring. This nonconference game serves as a final tune-up for both teams before holiday breaks and the heart of their conference schedules. Washington begins Pac-12 play at Stanford on Dec. 19. Green Bay opens Horizon League action at Miami (Ohio) on Dec. 22. Saturday’s contest is scheduled for a 2 p.m. PST tip-off.
