CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (Interstat) — A surging South Dakota State women’s basketball team visits Northern Iowa on Wednesday night in a nonconference clash at McLeod Center. The Jackrabbits (8-2) enter on a three-game winning streak, including an 88-72 road victory at Northern Arizona last Saturday. South Dakota State’s offense has been potent, averaging 86.6 points during the streak. Guard Madison Mathiowetz leads the charge, coming off a career-high 28-point performance against Northern Arizona. Over her last three games, the sophomore is averaging 18 points and has scored in double figures in seven of the team’s 10 contests. She is complemented by forward Brooklyn Meyer, who also scored 28 points in the latest win. Northern Iowa (4-4) has found its footing after a slow start, winning three of its last four games. The Panthers are coming off a 68-52 road win at Toledo, anchored by a stout defense that has held opponents to 56.5 points per game during their recent successful stretch. Forward Ryley Goebel is the Panthers’ key contributor. The senior is averaging 14.1 points and 5.6 rebounds per game and provides a defensive presence, recording multiple blocks in four games this season. Her 19-point effort in a narrow 51-50 win at Creighton on Nov. 20 highlights her capability to impact crucial games. The matchup pits South Dakota State’s high-scoring attack, which averages 78.9 points per game, against a Northern Iowa defense allowing just 62.1 points per contest. The Jackrabbits have been strong on the road this season with a 4-1 record away from Brookings. This is the final nonconference home game for Northern Iowa before it begins Missouri Valley Conference play in January.
