Preview: Undefeated Maryland Hosts Struggling Delaware State in Women’s Basketball COLLEGE PARK, Md. (Interstat) — The undefeated and No. 1-ranked Maryland Terrapins host the Delaware State Hornets in a nonconference women’s basketball game Wednesday at Xfinity Center. Maryland (11-0) enters riding high after a dramatic 100-99 double-overtime road victory at Minnesota on Sunday. The Terrapins, one of four remaining unbeaten teams in Division I, have won their games by an average margin of 32.5 points. Their closest contest was the two-point win over the Golden Gophers. Senior guard Saylor Poffenbarger is playing at an All-American level, coming off a career-high 30-point, 10-rebound performance in which she played all 48 minutes. Over her last five games, she is averaging 15.0 points, 7.2 rebounds and 2.6 assists. Delaware State (3-7) seeks to halt a three-game skid, most recently a 46-74 loss at UCF on Sunday. The Hornets have faced a challenging early schedule, with six of their seven losses coming on the road. They are 0-6 against Division I opponents away from home. Guard Nykesha Sanders, who scored a team-high nine points at UCF, is a key facilitator for the Hornets. Delaware State’s victories have come against lower-division Felician and Bloomfield College, and Division I Saint Mary’s (CA). Maryland’s potent offense, averaging 87.5 points per game, will test a Delaware State defense allowing 66.8 points per contest. The Terrapins also hold a commanding +14.8 average rebounding margin. This marks the first meeting between the programs since 2011. Maryland is 7-0 all-time against Delaware State. For the Hornets, the game begins a tough three-game road stretch against high-major opponents, with games at Georgetown and Tulane to follow. Maryland, after this contest, will host Central Connecticut State on Dec. 19 before opening Big Ten Conference play later in the month. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. EST Wednesday.
