Coppin State Looks to Build on Rare Win at SMU ABILENE, Texas (Interstat) — The Coppin State Eagles will try to carry momentum from a narrow victory into a nonconference road test against the SMU Mustangs in women’s basketball on Wednesday night at Moody Coliseum. The Eagles (2-8) snapped an eight-game losing streak with a 52-49 home win over Sacred Heart last Saturday. Prior to that, their season was marked by lopsided road losses to power-conference opponents like Oklahoma, Tennessee and Penn State. Coppin State is led by guard Shanaii Gamble, who posted 12 points and five rebounds in the win over Sacred Heart. Gamble has been a consistent contributor, scoring in double figures in two of her last seven games, including a 15-point effort at Penn State on Nov. 12. The Mustangs (4-6), members of the Atlantic Coast Conference, have shown flashes but seek consistency. They are coming off a 78-69 home loss to Syracuse on Sunday, despite a strong performance from forward Sahnya Jah. The sophomore has emerged as a key scorer, averaging 22 points and nine rebounds in her last two games, including a 22-point outing in a 78-63 win over Arkansas on Dec. 4. SMU’s season includes a three-game winning streak earlier this month, but also double-digit losses to Texas Tech, Grand Canyon and Syracuse. For Coppin State, the challenge will be finding offensive production beyond Gamble. Paris McBride (eight points, seven rebounds, four assists vs. Sacred Heart) and Sydney Burris (seven points, four rebounds, two blocks) provided crucial support in the team’s latest win. SMU will look to control the interior, where Jah has been dominant, and leverage the home court in Abilene. The Mustangs have alternated wins and losses over their past five games. This matchup represents a final nonconference tune-up for both squads before each embarks on a difficult stretch. Coppin State faces William & Mary on Saturday before a series of road games. SMU begins a string of ACC contests after its next two nonconference games, including a trip to Louisville on New Year’s Day. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. CST Wednesday.
